Two candidates running in the local May 1 election received a major endorsement Tuesday from one of the most recognizable names in politics.

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders tweeted his support for Terri Castillo, a candidate for San Antonio City Council District 5, and for Luke Amphlett, who is running to unseat Arthur V. Valdez in San Antonio ISD District 4.

Castillo, 29, a trained educator and substitute teacher for SAISD, is a member of the Texas Organizing Project and the Historic Westside Residents Association. Amphlett is a history teacher at SAISD’s Burbank High School.

“They understand that now is the time to think big and put working people ahead of the wealthy and powerful,” Sanders said in his endorsement tweet.

Amphlett responded by sharing details of his campaign block walk on Saturday. In the quote tweet, he said “Thanks Tio Bernie! Love and solidarity from Texas!!” His only opponent in the District 4 race is Valdez.

“Winning a District 5 that works for us is possible. Not me. US,” Castillo responded to the former presidential candidate’s tweet.

Castillo is up against 10 other candidates vying to replace outgoing Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales.

Early voting began Monday. May 1 is election day.
