Gabriela is the Founder of the Latino Wall Street movement, which provides financial education to the Latino community.
Some of the most successful professionals, entrepreneurs and influencers go years and years without realizing the power and potential of stock market investing. When it comes to the stock market, there is a misconception that if you aren’t provided with special insider education, you will never be able to master it. For that reason, too many people are missing out on the opportunities stock market investing provides.
But, as I can attest: The stock market is for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you are a student, a young professional or a retired person. You only need one thing to get started investing and earning money in the stock market: the ability to decide once and for all that you are going to make it work.
Learning how to invest and making your money work for you is something that I believe every person should obsess over, even if you have a successful career or a high-paying job. High-quality financial education should be open and accessible for everyone, regardless of age, gender or occupation. Financial education is a basic skill everyone should be taught, starting at a young age. The problem is many of us aren’t taught how to use our money, invest it or grow it. Our education systems do not set us up for a lifetime of financial success.
I want as many women, Latinos and people around the world who have historically been left behind to know they still have time to make their money work for them, instead of just them working for money as society has programmed us to do. In fact, it’s never too late to start investing in the stock market.

You Still Have Time To Make It Work
A good example of how this holds true can be found with Paulina Cervantes from Mexico. She is a young, successful businesswoman with a 65,000-plus community on social media where she showcases her fashion tastes and love of Mexico. Despite this success, though, Cervantes didn’t have knowledge about the stock market to put her incredible financial results to work for her future and family. Having identified this missing piece in what seems to be a have-it-all, picture-perfect life, she decided to read a book about the stock market for beginners so she could start learning from scratch, proving you are never “too successful” to simply begin.
Another example is Mexican New York City-based doctor and successful professional Dr. Mauricio González, who has become an expert voice in my community. We recently talked about how personal finances and overall health are connected. It is no secret that personal finances have an impact on your physical and mental health, and people with financial stress are more likely to have a mental illness, such as depression.
In a recent conversation, Dr. González told me that before living in New York, he believed the stock market was something dark and magical, reserved for a select few on Wall Street who knew how to invest. But, through studying and surrounding himself with a well-educated crowd, he realized that holding back on investments was wasting his time, money and potential.
He started educating himself on the subject by reading the “White Coat Investor,” a book focused on educating doctors about their finances, including how to take advantage of the stock market. Making his money work for him, rather than him having to always work for money doing late-night shifts at the hospital, was a game-changer, he told me. He encourages others to do the same.
Everyone Needs A Stock Market Crash Course
For both Dr. González and Cervantes, financial education wasn’t something that was provided to them during their impressive schooling. But, as both figured out, that doesn’t mean it has to stay that way. It only takes the decision and initiative to begin.
The stock market is still there and waiting to welcome anyone who is willing to learn about it. I am challenging you to dive into the potential of the stock market in 2021. Seek out the education and support you need to invest wisely and make your money work.
As I have seen firsthand: It’s never too late to make it happen.
